POVERTY BAY BEAT H.M.S. VERONICA. Th>; hockey season was unofficial!v ushered in yesterday, when a scratch game was played between a team from H.M.S. Veronica and eleven players, from Poverty Bay. Although the local team was not a representat;'m one, they easily outplayed the visiters, who, despite the fact that they were in better condition, lacked the initiative and combination of the local side. The visitors' were uuInckv in not .scoring more goals, weak shooting in front of the goal mouth spoiling many promising movements. Scon after the start the game was carried into the visitors’ territory and Poverty Bay scored five goals iri rapid succession, Brown and Swan scoring two each and Nicol being responsible lor .the other. The half ended: R.Bl 5, Veronica 0. On resumption, the visitors attacked hotly, hut weak shooting in front of the goal prevented a score. Fitzmaurice (P.B) let Grafts away on the left wing, and he centred to Nicol, who scored. A few minutes later Nicol scored his third goal by a clean run through the opposition, the opposing i goalkeeper slipping in attempting to intercept. From a scramble in front of. the home goal mouth Giles notched the visitors’ only goal, ,the game ending shortly after with the sa/re: Poverty Bay 7,. Veronica 1; ' Messrs. J. Henderson- and G. Grace were the referees.
