A pleasant little function took place at the Turanganui Hotel last evening, when Mr. J. Haughie, on behalf of tlie hotel staff, presented Mr. and ills. E. O. Warren with a silver tray on the occasion of their birthdays. Li making the presentation Mr. Haughie referred to the popularity that Mr. and Mrs. TV arren had always enjoyed with members of the staff, and said he hoped they would have many more birthdays. The recipients suitably responded.

In making his award for the soprano solo at the Napier Competitions, ttarHj judge. Mr. Barry Coney, remarked') upon the efforts of the winner, Miss Grace Clare, of Gisborne. This young lady, he said, was the possessor of a pure coloratura soprano voice, of considerable- sweetness, and fine compass, and lie had much pleasure in awarding her first prize. He went on to sav that such voices were very rare, there being plenty of “in betweens" but seldom having the two extremes, her cadenzas and trills being truly excellent. In fact, he added, laughingly. he really thought it was Galii Curci singing—and doubted if that lady herself could have sung the song better, and advised the young lady to take great care of her very unusual voice, adding it was the prettiest he had listened to. There was a difference of nine points in the second prize, which was an unusual thing, the marking in the singing sections all tlirough being’ very close indeed, usually one or two points dividing the winners. There were eleven entries in this section.
