STABBING AFFRAY
SUPPOSED SEQUEL TO LOVE AFFAIR. VICTIM’S CONDITION NOT SERIOUS. fPresp Association.) DUNEDIN. April 16. When waiting for a young lady in Milton last night, Arthur Lloyd was stabbed in the abdomen, it is alleged by William Hassett. Lloyd is now in Milton hospital, but his condition is not serious. At about ten o’clock last night Lloyd, who is about 21 years of age, and an employee of thelPublic Works Department at Ralclutha. was waiting at the gate of a home in Union street for a young lady, when Hassett came along. Hassett, according to reports, liad kept company previously with the young lady. Lloyd asked him what he was for, and Hassett replied, “Nothing.” Hassett is stated to have then caught Lloyd by the throat and stabbed him in the abdomen with a knife. The injured man’s call was heard by neighbors who summoned Dr. Edgar, superintendent of the Milton hospital. Lloyd was retrieved to hospital, where an examination revealed a wound in the abdomen one inch wide and two inches deep. Ilis condition was reported this afternoon as not being serious. Hassett was. arrested in South Hilton about 4 o’clock this afternoon, and will be charged at a special sitting of the Milton Court to-morrow morning with attempted murder. A remand will he asked for until next Monday’s sitting of the court, when a further remand will probably be requested until Lloyd is able to leave hospital.
