FROCKLNG AT MAKARAKA. In spite of the heat there was a very large attendance ot racing enthusiasts at the concluding day oi the Poverty Bay Turf Ohio’s bummer meeting. The weatner conditions were ideal with the hot sunshine which makes the chiffon frock both look and feel comfortable and with the faint breeze which gives movement to frills and filmy siarts and drives away sultriness. Saturday saw many charming lace frocks ana brilliantly patterned chiffons the vivid colorings adding to the gaiety of the scene.

Nolan who was wearing an elegant frock of French grey crepe do, chine trimmed with narrow hands of aecordeon pleating, a small black satin hat with ospreys and a black marabout wrap. Airs. F. AV. * A DANCE. A most delightful dance, was given by Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Barker at “Te I-lapara” on Saturday night tor the officers of H.M.S. Diomede. The ballroom looked most attractive decorated with rainbow colored streamers and masses of greenery, while, belladonna lilies and pink tiger lilies arranged in tall crystal vases added beauty and color to the reception rooms. Supper was served in the diningroom, the table, beautiful beneath softly shaded lights, being artistically adorned with a crystal bowl and vases. of scarlet flowering gum and maidenhair fern, 1 enchanting favors adding to the charming effect. Gay and delightful music supplied by Airs; Thompson's orchestra also contributed to the enjoyment of the evening. , , , Airs. Barker received her guests woarino- an elegant frock of handsomely beaded cyclamen georgette with a scalloped hem, a shaggy chrysanthemum to tope worn on the shoulder completing! her toilette.

• Miss Audrey Barker wore a picture frock of white satin and tulle, the tight fitting bodice of silver lace being caught at the waist line with a lai'o-e crimson velvet flower, while the full filmy skirt was designed with an uneven hem line. Crimson satin slippers added an attractive finish. Miss M. Selby-Tuppen was . extremely smart in a french frock ot mauve georgette, with a fine silvei lace overdress in jumper elfect caught in front with mauve ribbons, a shoulder flower to match completing the delightful effect. MERRY RF.A'FLI.F.IiS The hospitality of Mr and Airs Seed, of Upper .Stout Street, was most agreeably invaded on 1 lmrsda> when forty friends paid them a sutnrise visit. . The host, and hostess, though ohvfonslv totally unprepared, nevertheless extended a hearty welcome and Ine freedom of their commodious and beautiful home to the merry party. A: very .enjoyable programme of vocal and musical items was charmingly contributed, and interspersed between competitions and parlor names. -o dnet “The Long Long Trail” by a visiting lady guest and Mr Smith was delightfully' rendered. Mr Harvey Johns’ deep bass voice- was heard to excellent advantage in “She is. Fat <Vom the ’Land,” “Foiling Down to Rio”, and “The Deathless Army” each being sung with a line appreciation of tone value. A selection of humorous songs hv Mr R. Hey worth (who ahlv played his own accompaniments), drew forth a storm ol applause. Mr L. Smith excelled with his humorous contribution “The Rgg ’ bis light bass voice lending itself well to tire amusing composition. (F'our competitions were hold during the evening all being unique in their presentation and requiring keen wits to cone with the subtle answers. A delicious supper was partaken of in the spacious lounge, and on the larn-e verandah overlooking the river. The- revelry, and mirth continued unabated until the early hours of the morning and nrior to the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” the Host, in an able speech, expressed lr’s thanks to the gathering for “digging them out of their shell”. He stated that he and his wife had- enjoyed the evening as much ns the guests, . and he hoped they would copie again.

In reply Mr H. Johns thanked the host, and hostess for the welcome and the jolly evening enjoyed by all. He hoped that the shock of being caught in his shirt sleeves would not deter him from the. solace of a little liquid refreshment. In conclusion the toast

“Host and Hostess” was proposed by tho speaker and heartily honored, though not before a good deal of merriment had been occasioned hv a practical joke, perpetrated hv the host on the spokesman, who was served with a dummy wineglass in which the wine was sealed. •AN ALL-DAY PARTY. f.. - Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Parker entertained a number of the officers of H.M.S. Diomede in a delightfully informal manner on Sunday. The party, motored to Glcnroy Station where a jolly bathe and a picnic luncheon in the bush were thoroughly appreciated. On 'returning to “Midelney” a very happy time was , spent playing tennis, many excellent games boing enjoyed by both plavers and onlookers.
