BIG BLAZE AT OTAHUHU

(Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 13

A fire to-night destroyed the joinery factory of Thomas Clements, Great South Road, Otahuhu. Ihe damage is estimated at £7OOO. A number of employees will be thrown out of work. The lire originated in the engineroom on the ground floor of a large two-storey wooden and iron building, and had a strong hold when the brigade arrived. A huge crowd assembled from miles around, tlie flames leaping to a great height and being seen many miles away. Adjacent dwellings were threatened, but the demolition of a shed made an effective fire break. Great pieces ot machinery crashed through the upper floor and m a short time the buildino- was completely destroyed. Only yesterday -plumbers were engaged installing an automatic fire sprinkling device which had not been completed at the time of the fire. Mr Clements employs 130 hands, but only a few will be thrown out of employment. The building and contents were insured, but the amounts are unavailable. Several firemen were overcome by the neat and had to receive first aid -treatment.

SAWMILL BUILDING GUTTED

A fire broke out at 4.30 a.m. today at S.
