Five passenger steamers and 15 big freighters are fogbound, and unthe fog clears soon scores of additional ships, it is expected, will be unable to enter or leave the harbor. Only, one freighter managed to enter-during the last 24 hours and none was able to leave. NEW YORK,' Jan. 2. Zero temperatures are prevalent throughout the eastern half of the United States, with no relic! at present in sight. ■— • Relief organisations are expending maximum efforts tr> aid suffering from the blizzard which ushered in the New Year.

The death list, already 40, is mounting hourly. Nineteen are, dead in Chicago, eight in St. Louis, two in Pittsburgh, one in New York, and one each in several other cities. Snowfall is general, particularly in the middle west, where drifts Bft to 12ft high are reported. Roads are blocked, and train services badlv disrupted.
