At Cornwall Assizes Mary Hearn, a gipsy, aged (>B, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment for obtaining menev by false pretences from Richard Harris Paddy, a gardener, aged 75, of St. Hawes', Cornwall, and for protending to exercise •‘witchcraft. sorcery, or enchantment.'’
Hr. J. Pratt, for the prosecution, said the -pansy woman had obtained such an influence oyer Paddy that s!• ° had secured in all from him £-500. She pretended that the illness from which he, was suffering was due to his hieing overlooked bv the evil eye. In effect, she could cure, the black magic which was causing the illness. “She- said that if he did not- pay her mom he would go, blind, become a beci-lier, and die. In tb'S Wav Paddy parted yvitli practically all his monev'. and the mental stress made him lock so ill that his employer spoke to him about it. The consequence was a visit- to the police.”
