A Record Vote.
In September, ISS6, Mr. E. P. Joyce won a seat- on the Borough Council with a vote of 253, the highest polled by any candidate lip till then. His opponents were -Messrs. Dunlop 270, Whiuray 267, Morgan 2C6, Cits swell 111. Only 47 possible votes were unrecorded. A Lucky Recovery. There was a peculiar incident in connection with the local races tins week, sfiys the “Standard” of December 30, 1890 In the Hurry Scurry there was a dividend of £BO 11s. One ticket was held by dir. Karaitiana and a friend and the other was held in quarter shares by four Natives. The first ticket was presented all right, but the other was lost." After a meeting of the stewards .the amount was handed over by Mr. Harding to a Native who there was good reason to believe had taken out the ticket.
