A Be-Cauzed Crowd.
The first day of the P.B. Turf Club’s races in January, 1884, was ushered in with a strong nor’-wester, accompanied with a shower of pulverised metal—more commonly known as dust. The ride out to the course was anything blit pleasant. A roaring trade in gauze was carried on by the shop-keepers. Heads were tied up in a net-work of various colors and it was, says the “Telephone,” .scarcely possible to distinguish our dearest friends. So great was the force of the gale that some horsemen on the return journey had difficulty in retaining their seats.
Local Rugby Reps, of 1890.
The Gisborne Rugby reps who met Hawke’s Bay on September 15, 1890, were:—Full-back, Rutene; threequarters, Skcet, Run, Murphy: halves, Fisher and Wade; forwards, Loomb. Lysnar. Marshall, Trotter, Nisbctt, Allen. Hutchinson, Hepburn and Do Costa. The Hawke’s Bay side won by two points to nil.
Tumbling to Pieces,
An inspection of the Maori Church cn the Ivaiti is anything but gratifying. The roof is in a rotten state, with large holes in the top, and the whole structure has a dirty appearance. The burial ground, too, is in an uncared for state.—‘-Telephone,” February 1884.
20 Sovs.—Easy Money.
In the first event, the Hurdles, at the'Paidrikiri faces in March, 1882. Roebuck had a walk-over, liis rider merely sporting his colors at- the starting post and riding quietly back.
