BOROUGH COUNCIL

MEETING OF COUNCIL ' The fortnightly meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council which was held last evening _ was presided over by Ct*. J, Blair! in the absence of tlio Mayor. Tho councillors present were: J. W. Holmes, C. B. Smith, F. Collin, W. J. MacGihbon, IV. Cave and T. Todd. ' A proposal that the, registration fees for dogs should be made uniform in all local bodies in Poverty Bay and the Ehst Coast which was mooted some months ago, was referred to in a letter from the Waiapu County Council, The advice stated, that the Council had authorised its, chairman to go into the matter with the Borough Council at the next meeting of the* Highways Council and the views of the Gisborne Borough Council on tho matter were therefore sought.—Tho letter was received. Permission to- conduct a dart game and a man’s head game on a section, at the corner of Grey stieet and Gladstone road on Xmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. sought by Mr W. Pickett, of Gisborne, was granted. An application for connection with the town water supply was received from Mr J. Swarbrick, of Lytton road, the applicant stating that lie had only a 600 gallon tank to depend on.—The request was referred to the engineer. Permission to erect a kerbside petrol pump was sought by Dalgety and Co., Ltd., who stated it was to be in front of their premises in Road’s Quay.—The request was referred to the engineer. An acknowledgement of the increased grant towards the maintenance of the library was- received from fhe Turanganui Library Committee who expressed the hope that the Council would consider taking over control of the institution at an early date.—The letter was received.

An application for a second hand dealer’s license from Mr F. L. Haughie was granted. A request was received from the .1 pper Fox Street merged area ratepayers asking the Council to take a poll for the purpose of raising a special loan of £1354 to reticulate, the area with water and drainage. The petition on tho matter was signed by twelve ratepayers.—lt was decided to (take the necessary steps to take the poll and submit the 'application to the Local Government Loans Board. Advice was received that an offer had been made to the cemetery committee for the purchase of a section adjoining tho present Tarnhern cemetery. The section contained 18 acres- and the purchase price required is £995 which was the Government valuation. The Council’s opinion on the question of sale was asked.—The matter was referred to the reserves and finance committees.

INSPECTION OF WORKS. The report of the Inspection Committee stated: Hot Mix.—The committee have to report that the hot mix paving work, Palmerston Road, was duly inspected. and it was found that the contractors had completed the work to the intersection of Bright Street in a satisfactory manner. The next section to Grey Street has been metalled, but as it is not intended to lay Hot mix on same wo suggest that the engineer be instructed io have this portion of the work painted with tar or bitumen. Childers Road—This street between Grey and Cobdon Streets has been iormed and a foundation coat of metal laid in readiness for a 20ft hotmix strip :n tiie centre, winch ;s being put on this week. This will complete the hot mix paving contract. Childers Road Sports Ground. — This reserve was visited, where it was found that the banked track had been almost completed, and the grandstand work was well advanced. These works, together with the finishing of tho shingling of Birrell Street and Iva ti Beach road (which is almost completed), will bring the unemployed works to a close. General.-—The committee noticed the surface of the various streets traversed during their inspection appeared to be in very fan* condition, and the engineer stated that his maintenance gang had been kept fully employed.

LOAN WORKS. Reporting on loan works in progress, the borough engineer (Mr A. Young) stated: Maki Street. —The eastern footpath of this street has yet to be completed, also intersections of the roadway with Rutone and Wainui roads. ' Palmerston Road. —The, foundation work and preparation of surface for hot mix paving of the portion between Reel Street and Bright Street was completed by the Council s men on Saturday, 3rd inst. The Ncuchatel Asphalte Co. commenced hot mix work on Monday, the sth inst-., and the contractor has made good pro&1 Childers Road.—The foundation work and preparation of tho surface for hot mix paving on the portion he*tweeu Grey Street and Cobdon Street by the Council’s men is practically completed. This work was carried out expeditiously and well. The contractor for hot mix paving will commence work on Monday the 12th inst. WATER WORKS. * Tho lowest pressure recorded on the borough water supply during the past fortnmht ended December 3 was 601 bs and the highest lOOlbs. A total ot 150,000 gallons of Water were supplied free oFoliarae to the school baths. The top line had been maintained in working order. There were no leaks fortnight. Good progress iias been made in the work ol res tor-, jug damaged weirs at the louci intake. The quantity of water that passed through the Venturi meter tor ’the weeks ended November 28 and December 5, was 8,120,000 and 7,080,000 gallons respectively. The engineer was authorised , to purchase 12 impellers for the sewerage pumping stations at a cost ot £B2 on the wharf at Gisborne.
