NEW POWER FOR GISBORNE

REQUEST GRANTED

Recently the Chamber of Commerce made representations to the Minister for Agriculture with a view to obtaining the same facilities at Gisborne as at such sub-ports as Napier and New Plymouth in the matter of the importation and inspection of onions, fruit, plants, etc. Replying to the request, the Minister stated, in a letter received at yesterday’s meeting, that the matter had been further considered and although it was agreed that the present import regulations coukl not be altered, the Department would undertake to carry out the necessary inspection work with respect to goods shipped to _ Gisborne on a through ”ill of lading provided ample notice was given by tlio importer to enable the local Orchard Inspector (Mr G. H. Mein doc) to be present and provided, that, in such notice, the importer undertook to pay on demand any travelling expense-s incurred by the Department. In the event of several importers being served by the Inspector, such expenses may be shared between them, lU.it the importer first calling on the services of tbe Inspector will he held responsible for payment of the amount incaved.
