CrISBOKNE’S RECORD-SM ashing EFFORT. EK CITING EVENT IN MAY, 1915. One of the most striking events for Gis' £rne in connection with tlie collection of war funds during the Great War was the Queen Carnival Election in May 1915, in respect of which there were ten candidates who attracted an aggregate of ove;r 21- million votes, which produced over £22,000 —a record for New Zealand. The- final figures were:— Miss Norma Loisel (Tolaga Bay) ' 984,410 Miss Kathleen Fromm (Sports) 456,370 Miss Mary Taylor (Waiapu) 374,087 Miss Ivy Parker (Cosmopolitan Club) 310,827 Miss Vera MacDonald (Waikohu) 231,812 Mrs A. Zachariah (Territorials) 111,517 Miss Rita Caulton (Rowing) 75,414 Miss Gladys Cooper (Friendly Societies) 50,215 Miss Gena Gumming (motorists) 36,621 Mrs Grayson (Cook County) 26,803 The votes cast for Miss Loisel represented £9203. Over £‘3ooo worth of. votes was bought during the last hour of the contest. During the evening £IO,OOO in cash and cheques was handled. Mention must not be omitted of the famous Union Jack which, upon being sold and re.sold, fetched £IOOO. When it was put up of the last time it was estimated,that it had already fetched £B6O. Mr F. Harris started off by buying it for £25 and put it up again. Over and over again was the flag turned. At last, Mr Harris inquired: “How much is now wanted?’ “Twenty-eight pounds,”' replied the' auctioneer, Mr Ivells. “Then I will make up the amount,’ said Mr Harris, amidst great applause *
