Beyond Makaraka in 1803. the district displayed an abundance of feed. Though the fiats were still covered, with scrub rich grass was dispersed within the bushes and ah stock did even. All told there were about seventy Europeans in toe Tuiv.nea district in 1863. The first race meeting in Poverty Pay was held at Kohanga Karerea in the late CO's. Trade with the Natives in the 60's was by means el barter, the pakehas pacing for maize, wheat and pigs by means of goodsThe exceptionally good quality of rye grass seed from Poverty Bay was recognised in the 10's, when the price ranged from 7/- to S/- per bushel here and outside the district it fetched at times as much as 14/- per bushel.
