WAIR 0 A 'BOROUGH COHN OIL. The first monthly meeting of- the new Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last aught; present—The Mayor (Mr J. Corkill), and Councillors Anderson, Burridge Gillespie, f lint, Dickie, Single and Williams. ' The Mayor, in addressing the new council, said the return of the old council in a body, unopposed, was good proof that they enjoyed the confidence of • the electors. .He impressed on the members the necessity for economy. Expressions of regret to the late Dr. Somerville were paid, all present standing in silence, and a- letter expressing the sympathy of the Council is to be sent to Mrs Somerville. Wednesday -was declared the statutory- halt-holiday. Tile second Monday in each month was fixed for the Borough Council meeting. Tito Health Inspector’s report was lead. The overseer recommended that a coating of metal be put on the Marine Parade. Considerable discussion took place on the bad condition dl this load and Carroll Street. The overseer was instructed to do everything- to put these*roads in order. The ranger reported that three horses were impounded and 13 clogs registered during the past month. Wilson, put forward the claims of the Hockey Sab-Associa-tion to an equal use of the ground with the Rugby Sub-Uniou. Messrs Noble and Haiighton spoke in supp ort .--It whs decided that the Parks and Finance Committee meet the Rugby Sub-Union in connection with coming to an equitable arrangement with the Hockey Sub-Associa-tion. Mr H. L. Harbor waited on the Council to explain his proposed subdivision in Campbell Street. —-Cr. Andresen moved, and Or. Gillespie seconded, that the plan be passed.— The motion was put to the meeting and carried, Ors. Flint and Single voting against. it was resolved that the Council visit the cemetery on Tuesday with a view to considering the extension of same.

The question of appointing a,, fulltime- man to look after the cemetery, parks and reserves is to be goiio into at the next meeting. The question of making a c-ar park near the new sports ground was referred hack to the Works Committee, and is to he brought up again at the next meeting. , .. Or. Single proposed that a light be erected in Mahia Avenue near the Borough boundary.—lt was decided that the matter should he dealt with by the Lighting Committee. ‘ Cr. Williams drew attention to the bad lighting at the taxi stand.—lt was resolved that the Lighting Committee be instructed to improve lighting conditions in that spot. A number of ratepayers in_ McLean Street, George Street and Kopu ltd. wrote, applying for electric light and. power to be laid on.—lt was decided that the Lighting Committee attend to it. —Carried, The Wniroa Fire Brigade wrote, stating that fire extinguishers had not been installed in the Gaiety Theatre. —It was resolved that Messrs. Thomson and Johnson he requested to install same immediately. Cr. Gillespie brought up the* question of heating the dressing rooms in the stand in the sports ground. The electrical engineer was instructed to install heaters. Cr. Single raised the question of revising the Borough bye-laws.—Af-ter some discussion, the Mayor proposed that the works committee be instructed to go through the general by-laws.—Cr. Single Considered it a mailer for the Council's solicitors to handle.—The Mayor’s proposal was carried. CT. Single dissenting. Accounts totalling £1035 lis wero passed for payment.
