A VIOLENT TUSSLE
MAYORALTY OF CHICAGO
CITY IN HIGH FEVER
GUNMEN SAID TO HAVE BEEN IMPORTED
(United Press Assn .—Copyright.) (Received April 5, 11 P- m -) NEW YORK, April 4. Threats of violence between the contending factions at the Chicago mayoralty election have resulted in extraordinary efforts to minimise the danger of an outbreak of open warfare to-morrow. Several squads of police, each or thirty constables, have been ordered out to arrest all known gangsters and under-world characters following upon reports that these had “threatened to shoot up the pools”. Rumors, furthermore, had been circulated that gunmen had been hi ought in from neighbouring cities, particularly St. Louis, to augment the forces of certain ward leaders, who had planned to coerce voters. An altercation between a detective and a gunman resulted in the shooting of the former dead. Attorneys for arrested men_ in every case immediately obtained writs of habeas corpus to secure their release.—A. and N.Z.C.A.
