BRITISH SHIPPING
GRIEVANCES AGAINST DOMINIONS. ALLEGED BETTER PROTECTION TO FOREIGNERS. ' LONDON; Oct. 13. The Chamber of Shipping is presenting tlie Imperial Conference with a memorandum in which it attacks the Dominions’ discrimination against British shipping. It says: “The Dominion Labor’s interference with the terms of engagement of crews in Britain causes trade frequently to be transferred to foreign ships paying far lower wages. The shipowners recognise that Labor is responsible, but the Governments concerned appear to regard Labor interference with British ships with far less gravity than interference witn foreign vessels. The Governments do not give British shipping the same protection they give foreign shipping.” The memorandum also attacks State enterprises’ immunity from taxation, which, it states, is an anomaly that should be abolished wherever it exists, because it is unjust to private enterprise, uneconomic to the State, and generally disturbing to commerce.—A.N.Z.L'.A. BRITISH REPAIR WORK DONE AT ROTTERDAM. OUTLOOK AT HOME NOT TDD BRIGHT, FREMANTLE, Oct. 14. . Mr G. H. Scales, managing director of the New Zealand shipping firm of that name, is a passenger by the Mongolia. He says an amazing amount of repair -work to British ships is being done at Rotterdam. Mr Scales said British shipbuildingwas not entirely stagnant, nor was the outlook exceedingly bright, but it was probably a sign of returning prosperity that the latest return of ships under construction showed a preponderance of new tonnage for Britain. —U .P.A.
