The first Heathcote Williams Shield cricket match played in Auckland for a consklerabl time, commenced on a perfect wicket at Eden Park yesterday. The challengers, Christchurch Boys’ High School, are 51 runs behind Auckland Grammar School on the first innings . Grammar batted firs but, owing to good bowling by Merrit., were dismissed lor comparatively moderate total of 155. The fast wicket accounted for the failure of the Christchurch boys in their first innings, and they were dismissed for 10L Grammar, in their second innings, had scored 38 for the Joss of two wickets, when stumps were drawn for the day. Kasper, of Auckland, was responsible for a very fine bowling performance in capturing six Christchurch wickets at the cost of only 46 runs. The batting of both sides was not very impressive, but McCarthy and Schnauer, of Grammar, and Ward and limes, of Christchurch, all made their runs with good shots. Following are the scores: —
