UNUSUAL MISHAP ON TRAM. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 26. A curious mishap occurred this morning on a tramcar travelling along the North Parade, Richmond. As tiro car was rounding a corner the trolly pole left the overhead wire and dropped down and struck a young lady passenger, who was travelling on top of a. double-decker on the head. She has been admitted to the Christchurch Hospital, where she is progressing satisfactorily. FATAL FALL FROM TRAM. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 26. . The death occurred in the hospital to-day of William Leitz, aged fiftysix, employed by the Phoenix Insurance Company, who resided at River Road, New Brighton. He fell last night at about 9.45 o’clock from a tramcar, which mas entering New Brighton and received fatal injuries to the head.—P.A. A NARROW ESCAPE. TRAIN COLLIDES WITH CAR. HOKITIKA, Jan. 26. About 12.30 p.m. to-day a motor car driven by J. D. Lynch, of Greymouth, at the approach to the northern end of the Arahura combined road and railway bridge, met a special train from Hokitika. There was heavy rain at the time and the car driver failed to see the train until he was on the rails turning to cross the bridge. The train was only a fewyards away and was pulled up in a remarkably short distance, but failed to avert a collision. The car was smashed up, but Mr Lynch and his passenger, Mr W. Barnett, had a miraculous escape, the former receiving a cut on the nose, and the latter one. on the back of the head, each requiring several stitches. Otherwise they were uninjured.—P.A.

FOUND DEAD IN RIVER. INVERCARGILL, Jan. 26. The body of an old man, John Moloney, aged 80, was found in the Waihopai River this afternoon. Moloney resided with a daughter in South Invercargill, and had 'been missing since Monday morning. The police searched all that night without success. Deceased had' been in the habit of going off by himself. An inquest - will be held.—P.A.

KILLED BY FALL OF A TREE. GREYMOUTH, Jan. 26.

Joseph Hanrahan, single, 36, a bushman,' was killed instantaneously at 2.30 p.m. near Nelson Creek while trimming a tree felled over four hours earlier which, in falling, struck another, a birch.
