A COAL MINING DISPUTE. GREYMOUTH, Jan. 26. A claim for £612-5, said to be the largest of its kind in a Dominion Court, opened in the Warden’s Court at Greymouth yesterday, Mr. W. Meldrum presiding. Boote and party alleged that about January 1, 1924, the defendant (name iiot sent) broke and entered plaintiff’s coal mine on the State mine reserve near Bunollie, and took away large quantities of coal. The mines adjoin the workings allegedly encroached. Argument is proceeding as to the question of the Court’s jurisdiction.—-|P. A. Later. In the case -wherein Booth and party, co-operative colliers, sued Armstrong and party for damages, the Warden decided that the Court had jurisdiction and decided that it would hear evidence on February 5. Counsel will meantime arrange for a surveyor to inspect the disputed locality. MAORI IN TROUBLE. HAMILTON, Jan. 26.. A full-blooded Maori named Henry Edward, was charged at the Police Court at Hamilton to-day, with obtaining the sum of £5 from Frank Benjamin Morley, of Te Aroha by means of a false representation in regard to a cheque. The accused admitted his quilt, and the Magistrate, taking into account the fact that accused had been in gaol for a fortnight awaiting the hearing, imposed a sentence of fourteen days.—P.A.

PARTY LINE USERS FALL OUT. HAMILTON: Jan. 26. A case of some interest to users of party telephone lines came before the Magistrate’s Court at Hamilton today, when Donald Mclntosh and L. G. Osborne proceeded against H,. Livingstone., J. H. Gore and H. T. Kent in an action for damages for inconvenience alleged to have been caused through the defendants’ act in severing telephone lines, giving their two neighbors, the plaintiffs, communication witli the outside world. The contending parties are farmers residing at Tuhikaramea, about nine miles out of Hamilton.

Negotiations were entered into for a party telephone line, connecting nine neighboring farmers with the Hamilton exchange, the party lines being private lines erected by the subscribers themselves. The plaintiffs’ objection was to paying twice as much as was originally agreed upon. The case was only partly heard, and resulted in defendants agreeing to re-establish plaintiffs’ connection with the main telephone system.—P.A.

ALLEGED'ILLEGAL USE 01* CARS

CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 23. Captured in Hereford St. at about half-past nine on Monday night, after an exciting chase, Harold Hogwood, described as a clerk, aged 18 years, appeared at the Magistrate’s Court to-day. He admitted having converted to his own use a motor car belonging to Augustus Phillip De Lautour, but denied having stolen the car of Robert M. Watson. Having pleaded not guilty to the second charge, he wars committed to the Supreme Court for trial, while he was remanded till the Supreme Court case was disposed of on the other charge. Bail was refused. —P.A. GRAVE "CHARGE AGAINST YOUNG MAN AUCKLAND, Jan. 26. In the Police Court, Nathan Morris (23) was charged with committing rape on a woman aged 74. In asking for a remand until January 28, Senior Detective Hammond said the case was most unusual. Morris was a steward on the American freighter West Henshaw, while the victim is an old lady in the last stages of senile decay. A remand was granted. Bail was not allowed.—P.A.
