HARBOR BOARD

. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Harbor Board, held last evening, was attended by Messrs W. G. Sherratt (chairman), A. H. “Wallis, T. Corson, W. G. Holds worth, I. Mirfield, C. G. Holdsworth, G. Witters, J. Tombleson, R. Dymock, G. Smith. Leave of absence was granted to Mesrss T. Holden, R. M. Birrell, T. Quirk, T. Todd, and C. H. Williams. The Marine Department wrote approving of the use as a hartx>r of the bay at Wliareongonga by the Board for vessels transporting stone, and also of the construction of the protective works on the lines indicated by Mr Campbell.—The Chairman stated that the Marine Department had approved of the plan. The letter was received. A letter was received from the Murine Department to the effect that the Minister iiad approved of the extension of the river limits of Poverty Bay to permit vessels to plv to and from Wliareongonga.—The Chairman stated that the Board had been granted sufficient extension of the river limits for their purposes in connection with the transport of stone from AVhareongonga.—The letter was received.

The Bank of New Zealand wrote asking the Board to comply with certain formalities in connection with the hypothecation of debentures.—The Chairman stated there was no provision in the clause inserted in the Act last session for the hypothecation of temporary debentures. If the Board borrowed from the A.M.P. Society they would not require to hypothecate any debentures. He moved that the Board write to the Minister for Finance drawing attention to the fact that there was no provision in the Act for the hypothecation of temporary debentures and the Board agreed to this course.

.Referring to his application for oil and mineral rights over the Harbor Board’s properties at Tauwharcparac, Mr F. Cooper wrote stating that he v. as thinking out a scheme whereby the lessees might benefit when oil was found. “I am prepared to put up, say, a £SOO guarantee of good faith, either to bore within 18 months or_to abandon geological advice, such £SOO to bear interest at the rate of 6 percent. or to be returned on commencement of the drilling or on abandonment.”—“l move that it be received and not read,” remarked the Chairman.—“l would like to hear it,” said Mr "Witters, and the Chairman agreed to it being read, but it was merely “received.” The Olympic Swimming Club wrote asking permission to conduct a carnival in the harbor on March 13 and 27, and suggested a course for 100yds between the construction yard and the training wall. —Subject to the carnival not interfering with the harbor works or shipping.the request was granted. The following tenders were accepted :

One 20-ton crane, Samuel Butler and Co., England * £1045. One Goliath crane, bolt and washers, Ayers Electric Co., £ll6. Two winches, John Chambers and Co., Auckland, £448. One boiler, John Burns and Co., Auckland, £2lO. It was slated that the winches and boiler were required for the scow Zingnra. Accounts amounting to £17082 i2s 5d for December and £18,023 for January, were passed for payment. It was stated that the amount included £(>000 for rep irs ■ o the Pelican. REPORTS. The Acting Harbor Master (Capfc. J. AV. Holmes) submitted the folio ,ving report :—“During the month fine weather lias been experienced', northerly winds prevailing. All navigation lights have been visited and a-e in good working condition. Soundings in the Harbor show a channel of 4ft Oin when zero is on the gauge. Ninetyseveit ships have worked the port from November 27th to January 21, gross tonnage 93,633; nett tonnage 54,701. The Engineer (Mr R. Campbell) in his monthly report stated . In compliance with the Noxious Weeds Act the annual clearance of fennel, etc., from the Board’s property is in hand. The dredger “John Townley” ha s been employed at the entrance and in the channel of the existing harbor, nul the grab dicKl"? f>s required. A verandah has been added to the Board’s cottage at Wainui. All necessary minor repairs to the Board’s property cn the waterfront, etc., have been duly carried out. The report was adopted.
