PREMIER THREATENS TO PUSH THROUGH ABOLITION BILL.
(Received Jan. 3, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 3. A sensation lias been caused in political circles by tlie presentation to the Government of a memorial signe by more than two dozen; membeis of the Legislative Council, asking foi payment for members of tlie Upper House Ministerial circles regard the memorial as tlie deciding factor m the Council’s abolition, and the new appointees will be put to the test to enE Government to see if the pledges they gave the party to abolish the LpPer House av> genuine. The payment demanded is £3OO annually. Members making the demand include autiLabor as well as Labor supportersIt is stated that after the petition was presented to the Government some members of the Council struck with the object of forcing tlie Government’s hand, there being a remarkable falling off in Council attendances. Mr Lang, however, countered tins move by the simple expedient of threatening to bring down the Legislative Council Abolition Bill, which is already being drafted. U.P.A.
