DENSE BUSH FIRES NEAR CITA
HEAVY DAMAGE REPORTED
(Received Jan. 3, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 3. The city is enveloped in a dense haze from bush fires raging in the Tynong, Garfield and Berwick disThe Gippslnnd fires commenced on Thursday and extended until within thirty-four miles of Melbourne. At one stage Tynong -was in danger of being enveloped. The fires caused a weird effect in the city, smoke being blown right across, the sun through the haze presenting a deep orange color. The smoko was so thick that it threw 1111lightcd places in deep shadow. Heavy damage has been caused U.P-A.
