(Received Jan. 2, 1.25 a.m.) HONGKONG, Jan. 1. Tiie bigg’st lire for years gutted the lino- Hongkong Hotel, which was crowded with guests who had retired in the small hours of the morning after a New Year’s Eve dance. • The fire started at nine in the morning. Many guests were still Vhed and escaped hurriedly with such clothes as were available.
The fire brigades were assisted by 250 soldiers fro n the East Surrey regiment and naval units from the British warships made strenuous efforts to save the building but, by noon, the roof had fallen and the whole building was doomed. The streets in the vicinity were littered with hotel furniture and guests' belongings of which considerable quantities were saved. The is very heavy and at present it is impossible to estimate. Thomas Cook and Sons’ offices were also damaged. Prince George was among the naval men who were landed.—Reuter.
