FATAL ILLNESS IN HOTEL. DUNEDIN, Jan. 1At the inquest on John Murphy who died in the Empire Hotel, evidence showed that the deceased, in the early morning, complained to the licensee of pains in the abdomen. He had been given some brandy and later, had requested the porter to procure medicine from a chemist which he had taken. A little later the licensee found deceased lying in the passage. A doctor was sent for: but the man expired shortly after his arrival. Hie Coroner found that deceased died of heart failure as the result of acute abdominal trouble, the nature of which c-ould not he determined without a post mortem. The evidence had shown that dec-eased had not been drinking at the hotel. The Coroner commented on the fact that the licensee had not called a doctor earlier. It- was possible that that would not have saved the man’s life, but it was unfortunate nothing further had bee n done for deceased. Murphy had been emploved by thePublic Works Dept, at Mißer’s Flat. WIDOW’S FATAL FALL DUNEDIN. .Jian. 1. Agnes Elizabeth Patrick, widow, aged 69 years, who resided at- 78 Colombo St.. Christchurch, and who arrived at Dunedin on Dec. 19. died in a private hospital here at 8.45 a m. to-day. She had been to Portobelloand returned here on Dee. 24 and when stepping off a bus she fell and it i- thought broke a pelvis bone. An inquest was opened and evidence of identification given by Charles Andrew Cotton, Professor of Geology,. Wellington. The inquiry was adjourned sine die.

FATAL DRAY MISHAP. J ONE MAN KILLED; ANOTHER PADLY INJURED. BLENHEIM. Jan. 1. A fatality occurred yesterday on the Upper Awatere Road, whereby Thomas McQueen lost his life and Arthur Coombs was injured. The men had been at tho Jordan accommodation house and were leturning to Woodmen’s bend where they were employed as laborers by the Public Works Department in a spring dray. Later the dray was found overturned down a bank about two miles from Jordan. The drav lay across McQueen’s chest. Ho was quite dead. Coombs was found in the scrub nearby dazed, his foot being badly crushed, and was bruised about the body. Ho was taken to hospital, but is unaMf to give a coherent explanation of the accident.—P.A.

LEG AMPUTATED THROUGH FIREWORKS EXPLOSION.

Edward Lomas, who*was engaged in connection with the fireworks display at the Exhibition on Thursday night sustained a fracture of the leg through a rocket explosion. He was removed to hospital, whore the leg was amputated.—P.A.
