EXPLOSION IN OFFICE
NARROW ESCAPE OF TWO MEN
WELLINGTON, Dee, 2S. The apparent failure of a valve on the air-compressor, used for the supply of free air for motor tyres, causing a startling explosion in a building on Lambton Quay tills morning. The concussion was so terrific that it wrecked two offices and a storeroom. Two mei:< in cue of - the offices were cut about. the arms by flying glass, but the room In which* the explosion occurred was fort rno tel v unoccupied. The explosion occurred in the rooms used by Firestone Tyres, Ltd The air-compressor was capable of withstanding a pressure of 2oolbs. There is' a safety valve which comes into play at 200ibs, but apparently it must have jammed. Tiie explosion wrecked the timbers of the room, the electric metres and gas pipes, and cracked the concrete walls. It also wrecked a big glass partition between the offices.— Press Assn.
