WHEAT SHORTAGE
FARMERS WANT GOVERNMENT TO CONTINUE CONTROL.
WELLINGTON, Oct. 2S. No definite information was ova liable at to-day’s meeting of the North Canterbury executive of the Farmers’ Union as "to how the season’s wheat will be handled, hut it was stated that there was every possibility of Government control. The chairman (Mr, J. D. Hall) asked of there was anything rcsu.t ng from the communication between the Wheat Board and the Department. Mr. W. Mulholland; There is only this, that we feel that there is no other way out of the difficulty than for the Government to control. We cannot see how the Government can get out of it. There is no possible chance of getting the wheat-growers’ organisation to be given authority to control the wheat. If there is control. the Government will control it absolutely. Wo shall know in about ten days when the actual figures of acreage come out, but so frr as our information goes the shortage will be prettv couslderabe. Supposing figures "to be as goed as possible, say 120,000 to 130. CCO acres, it means a verv considerable shortage. The position will probably be cleared after the election. Consideration of the marketing question was held over.—P.A.
