TROTTING CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Poverty Bay 7 .Trotting C ! liib, held last evening, was attended by fifteen members, over- whom Air. F. Tolerton presided. After the balance-sheet was presented, a member, asked “What amount is available for another meeting?” The President: There is about £277 available. The secretary stated that the bank balance amounted to £267, plus £76, which was available at any time, making a total of £332. Air. Lawless asked" how the “tote” receipts last meeting compared with the previous year. The secretary stated that the receipts for the last meeting amounted to £1265, and for the previous year £1324. This could not be taken as a fair criterion as the two meetings were held within a week of one another. The president stated that much less was, received from privileges at the last meeting, but more revenue was ■obtained from cards. “In presenting to \ 7 ou the annual report and balance-sheet there is not much Comment necessary,” stated 1 the president. - 1 ‘We certainly' have tocongratulate ourselves on our; -present financial position,'riot from the- success' of our recent meeting, but from? the generosity of some of our members, chiefly our vice-presid'cnt, Air. Fisken, who donated the whole 'of his stakes at the meeting, amounting to £T92 10s, to the Club’s funds. Special mention should also be made to the assistance rendered to the Oub by Mr. F. G.oodman, who donated a valuable gold cup, competed for at the last meeting. Your committee unanimously elected both these gentlemen life members of the Oub, and wo trust our action meets with the general approval of members. .We should also like to mention the services of Air. H. Greaves, who ably filled the position of honorary starter, also those of our secretary, Air. H. E. Dodd, who offered Iris services free, if the race meeting was not financial. A small bonus was voted to Air. Dodd, which, however, was not in keeping with the services rendered. The Gisborne Racing Club •also came to our help with a handsm© rebate of portion of the rent. We also extend our thanks- to all stewards and other members who worked towards the success of the meeting. Representations have been made in the right quarter to get an extra day’s permit, but so far . without success. Opportunity 7 will be given members to discuss fully our future position. As you will see from the profit- raid loss figures, without the stakes which were harded back to _the Club, \\o made a loss of £79 7s 7d for the y 7 ear.” The president asked for an expression of opinion as to the future operations of tlie Club. He pointed exit that representation- had been - made to the Government for a permit for an extra day’s racing, and although the heads gave all sorts; of' promises, nothing had yet materialised. One thing that was ir. the Club’s favor was that the Club could now introduce two flat races into their programme,, and, in a. district like this, with so many hacks in work, it would prove a big attraction and would ma»terially increase the “tote” investments. , . c Air. S'. Wootton favored the idea of putting on two flat races at the next trotting meeting, and stated that mixed racing was much in vogue in tlie South Kland. The president stated that the Club would have to apply, to the Racing Conference for permission to introduce flat races into their meeting, but that he thought would merely be lormal, because the suggestion had been adopted by the Wanganui Club and permission! had been given. Alenrbers were generally impressed with the proposal, it being stated that the public were not yet greatly interested in trotting, but meantime this innovation would cater for both classes of sport. Air. J. J. AlcDonnkl expressed the opinion that the Club should send sv strong deputation to the “beads,’ who were going the rounds of the country, ard urge them to press for a- two days.’ permit. A recommendation wa-s made to the committee that a date in January lie fixed for the day of the mcetui". , Officials elected were as under : President, All 7 . F. Tolerton; vi'er president. Air. R. Fisken; committee, Messrs. H. Greaves, 11. Jacobi, E. AlcDowell. L. F. Richardson, AY. 11. Smith and A. D. Tnrr.
