DULL AND WET IN AUGUST

FARMING OPERATIONS DELAYED.

(PEERS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Sept 7. Mr Bates’ weather summary for August states that the weather during the month was generally dull and wet, though on the whole fairly mild in the north hut very bleak at times especially in the south. The raim-dl appeals to have been below the average in the Auckland province and in the west coast of noth island*, but greatly in excess on the c-ast coast, especially of the South Island. A storm of somewhat local character occurred in Canterbury on August 6 and 7, with heavy rain and bleak weather. A cyclone passed in the north between August 12 and 15 accounting for high east to south-iast winds, and some heavy downpours. Anti-cyclonic conditions followed a. id I:hc highest reading of the barometer 80.675 inches was registered at Wellington on the morning of August 17. An intense westerly disturbance passed in the south, with a baro-m-'i.r- reading of 22.95 inches at Bluff on .u.pust 23. and was preceded and followed by very unsettled weather. Snow, bail and thunderstorms wore reported at various times o<* the high country of the south, and some sleet at the lower levels. Iho wet ■weather was a great hindrance to farming operations in Canterbury, and the growth of grass was delayed by several frosts and dull weather in many other parts of the country.
