BROMLEY’S BOAST
•‘WE WILL FIGHT WITH THE GLOVES OFF” BITTER ATTACK ON CAPITALISTS. CAPITAL LEVY ONLY REMEDY FOR UNEMPLOYED (SYDNEY SUN CABLE.) LONDON, Sept, 6. At a preliminary meeting of the Trade Union Congress, held at Scarborough, Mr Bromley, addressing the engine-drivers, said he was able to see a first glimmer of the storm which inevitably would be serious. So far trade unionism had been fairly successful, but the capitalists had found many ways of drawing its teeth. A favorite method was to flatter the Labor leaders, giving them fat jobs or steady rich bribes. Many leaders were very susceptible to flattery. Labor. with a united front, could defeat the coming attempt to reduce wages, but a fight- was impossible while some leaders had cne foot on the earth and the other in the clouds.
Mr Bromley complained of the appalling gluttony, extravagance, and luxury, despite widespread unemployment, privation and distress. He gave as an instance that warships were detailed to escort the King’s yacht to the Mediterranean: sporting guns, weighing an aggregate of 210 tons, s-'-'t to Scotland for the grouse shooting: bloated millionaires spending and gambling lavishly _ at Deauville. Unemployment was irremediable until the introduction of a capital levy. “If the railways insist on cutting wages”, he said, “we won’t fight like gentlemen but with the gloves off. We will lead locomotives anywhere without notice.”
