In recognition of the services rendered by the member for Eden, tho Hon. O. J. Parr and Mrs. Parr wore on Monday night tendered a complimentary banquet by the electors.'Mr Massey paid a tribute to the good work done by Mr. Parr as Minister of Education. He said that in his thirty years’ experience Mr. Parr had been the most enthusiastic holder of the portfolio, and was doing Jiis duty to the country faithfully and well.— Press Assn’.
A New York cable states that Viscount James Pirrie, ehead of Harland arid Wolff, shipbuilders, of Belfast, died suddenly on Saturday night from bronchial pneumonia aboard the steamer Ebro, returning from South America. Viscountess Pirrie accompanied him. The body will arrive on Friday and be sent to Ireland aboard the Cedric, sailing on Saturday. Lord Pirrie left Southampton on March 20 on a visit to South American ports, to study shipping prospects.— A. and N.Z.C.A.
Yesterday was - the 'lßth anniversary' of the death of Mr. Richard John Seddon, and a gathering took place at the statue of the late Air. , Seddon in the Parliamentary grounds. Sir Joseph Ward, the Hon. Roderick McKenzie* Sir James Carroll. and members of the Went Coasters’ Association were present, and friends and relatives were amongst the gathering. Before laying a wreath at the foot of the statue, Sir -Joseph Ward paid a high tribute to the memory of the deceased statesman.—P.A.
