NOTES AND NEWS. It is reported that Mr Berne Vallance, of Masterton, intends racing on a fairly large scale this winter, and '•■•'ill confine his charges to hurdle and cent visit to Australia, Air Vallancc steeplechase events. During his rehought a powerful looking grey hunter, wliicli lie-has sent to the Hawke's Bay district to qualiiy tor hunting events. A gelding by Peter Pan from AVaihora is also being schooled over big country, and is shaping well. Then Mahuru is coming on nicely, and in her only start at AVanganui ran second. This marc proved last- season that she is a hold fencer, hut was badly galloped on at Ellersiie when at the top of her form. A sensation was caused at KalgcorJie races on May 17 by "the discovery of an electric battery. It was described as being a little larger than a v.viodeu matchbox, bound with insulating tape with two contact points at '•>ne end. The current was apparently produced by a wet cell. The stipendiarv steward, Air Shea, noticed that R. Gardener was handling The Toff in a peculiar manner in the Third Class Plate. The Toff finished fast in fifth place, and a little later Air Shea thought, lie saw Gardener throw something over the fence. He sent his assistant to the spot, and the battery was found, and Gardener was disqualified for life. An inquiry into The Toff’s running was adjourned. At times the form of horses leads one to expect great things front them (says a Taranaki writer), and many a good judge has been sadly disappointed over the failure of such animals, which sink into oblivion just as quickly as their star rose. This occurred to the writer after witnessing the poor display given by Alilitaire on the concluding day at the recent AAanganui meeting, on which day the good-look-ing son of Alartian was fancied by Ins connections. In the event in question Alilitaire was one of the rear division, and gave a very poor display as compared with his effort in the . same event twelve months ago, which he won, and on his showing in tjiat ia;e many excellent judges immediately sorted out Alilitaire as the possible winner of the AVinter Hurdles at Trentham and the Grand National at Riccartoii. How those unacquainted with the details of the case it would certainly appear as if the judgment was astray, hut it is not generally known that Alilitaire did not go on so well in himself as anticipated. Trouble overtook him which has prevented him from proving that he would have been a good horse oyer hurdles, though not perhaps a National wmI C Moifaa was unquestionably one of the greatest hurdlers and crosscountry horses of New Zealand. He was in fact, described as the Bed Leap of his native land. In referring to past winners of the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase, the “Special Commissioner” of the “Sportsman” recently said:— 1 do not altogether agree that Moifna was an ugly boast. He was plain, no doubt, with some excess of AValer conformation, hut he had a magnificent 'forehead and depth of girth, and no finer jumper ever crossed the Ainttee country. But for going wrong m the wind, he would probably have won a, second time.” Moifaa it will be remembered, was purchased by the late King Edward after the New Zealander won at. Aintrec, hut when put into training for the following yeai s rnco it wns discovered that he iiaci become useless for racing purposes. A Taranaki writer saw Mark hit® being hacked about last week, nml the chestnut looks very big and burly. An exchange states that the gelding will shortly be nut into strong, work, but it is not likely that he will he asked to hustle much until next season, when he will receive a New Zealand Cup preparation. Among the visitors at the AVanganui meeting says “The AVatcher” in the Evening Post, was Air AValtcr Armstrong, of Grey town North, who had not been art a. meeting at- the AVost Coast town since King John won the AVanganui Steeplechase in 1880. He also witnessed the success of Betrayer in the AVanganui Cup, which race was said to be the first thousand-pound stake in this Island. . Nothing hut the skill of Air Frank ©undell, the Swindon veterinary surgeon, could have got blaster Robert to the post. The horse suffers from a diseased hone in one ’of. his feet, and only poulticing has relieved him of the pain. This works off when he starts to gallop,-but the son of Moorside 11. must be wonderfully, stouthearted to get round as he did. and it siays much for the training of the Hon. Aubrey Hastings. “Cardigan-;” in the Sydney Referee, says: Razzle Dazzle comes from the same .family on the dam’s side as Heroic, St. James (champion American two-year-old), Traquair, Magpie, and other famous gallopers, as her dam, Simper, is by Symington (son of Ayrshire) from Ohelys, a good performer. by Sir Visto from Chelandry. It is truly remarkable the number of great gallopers at present racing in different countries that* claim Ghelandry as either their second or third dam.'

SOCCER.

YESTERDAY’S GAMES

In consequence of the unsettled state of the weather the postponement committee of the Poverty Bay Football Association cancelled all the advertised matches for the Reserve yesterday. The selectors however, agreed to allow sides to bo chosen for a practice match. As a result of the selection at 11 o’clock the Foresters A took the field against a team of Saturday plavcis with one or two exceptions. The Foresters proved too good for the combined team, winning by three goals to two. Twigley (2) and Venables (1) scored for Foresters and W. Hanna and F. Sharp noted for the combined team. Wood (goal), Venables and Harvey were the pick of the Foresters Hope and W. Hanna showed good form for the combination. Mr. McKay was referee.

In tho afternoon at 2.30 teams representing Blues and Whites opposed each other, the Blues being victorious by three goals to nil. T. Hill (2) and 'll. Turnbull scored. Mr Johnson was referee.

Taken all round an interesting and enjoyable football day was 6pent in spite of the piercing westerly. After witnessing the Foresters team at work yesterday it is quite- evident that the selectors must seriously consider the claims of the Thursday players when compiling the chosen representatives against the Chinese combination. Further it is indeed doubtful if the Foresters in their present form will succumb to any Saturday team. This team is composed of young speedy and resourceful players.

hockey. FEILDING TOURNAMENT. FETLDING, June 3. The meiT’s contest was won by Lower Hutt, who defeated Pirates (Foil ding). Tim Phillpot Cup for the Wesley Bible Class teams was won by Feeding who defeated Wellington.-—P.A.
