GERMAN OPERA.
WAGNERIAN DRAMA IN LONDON
HIGHER STANDARD THAN EVER
(Received May 6, 8 p.m.) LONDON, May 5. An audience as brilliant and numerous as in the old days assembled at Covent Garden for the opening of the German'opeta season, when ’'.Vagner’s “Rheingold” will he performed in German for tlnVfirst time since 1014. Critics comment on the strangeness of the sensation of listening again to the correct slow German tempi and witnessing again all the organised gestures of Vaguerism drama, hut agree that the performance is a most noteworthy one, going so far as to say there must have been a vocal as well as political revolution in Germany, for the standard is higher than ever.— A. and N.Z.C.A.
