WORK ASKED FOR WAIHI MEN. MINISTER’S SYMPATHETIC REPLY. WELLINGTON. May .6. The stress of unemployment at Waihi,’ caused by the cessation of crushing at Waihi Grand Junction works was brought before the notice of tlio Prime Minister and the Minister of Public Works to-day by a deputation headed by Mr Holland, M.P The deputation asked that the Government should find employment 101 as many of the men a.s possible,. and suggested that if . somei additional machinery was provided forty to ntty extra men might he employed on the k Waihi-Athenree section of the East y Coast railway. It was also urged that various road works in the district should bo put in hand, and that the construction of the new Paeroa railway station and the laying out of yards ' would absorb a considerable number of men. The Hon J. G. Coates agreed to do his utmost immediately to find employment for at least 80 men. This will give relief to the most necessitpus cases, where the men have families to support. ~ It is estimated that the mymber of men rendered idle is about 200. liie matter is to be referred to the Jln-gineer-in-Chief to the Public Works Department.-—P-A. ______
