The City Hall was last night the scene ot : what was probably the gayest dance of the season, the occasion being tlie first annual ball held by tho Gisborne Golf Club. The street outside the hall was lined on both sides with motor cars extending for a considerable distance (town the road, in all, over MO ears were parked near the ball. The ballroom was profusely and artistically decorated with paper streamers, bracken and imitation poppies, and xn addition the roof was Hung with bunches of balloons, artistically decorated with painted butterflies. Tho shaded lights shed a soft-glow upon the dancers beneath, many beautiful and exquisite nocks being in evidence. The floor was at times slightly overcrowded, the total attendance beong close on oUO. A lengthy programme of the latest music was rendered by McMuiien’s orchestra in a manner pleasing to tho dancers, encores being frequently demanded. A room, decorated after tho same style as the ballroom, vms comfortably fitted up as a bridge room and the congestion on the floor was considerably relieved by the departure of those desirous of playing a few rubbers between intervals of jazzing.

A distinctive feature ol the supper room arrangements was the means of lighting provided, the tables being illuminated by dozens of candles in silver candlesticks with lemon and tangerine shades. Violets and anemones were effectively used for ornamenting the tables. The walls were covered with fern leaves, and bundles of balloons and paper poppies wore strung from the walls to the comic of the ceiling, the whole presenting a very art*stie appearance. A delicious supper was provided by tiie lady members of the club. The ball undoubtedly was one of the most successful functions yet held this year, and great praise is duo to the organisers, Mosclanies 11. IT. Burke and JG. Adair, with whom were associated Mesdames W. M. Irvine and Noel Bull, who carried out the decoration scheme and Mesdames M. Bull, L. Willock and Nolan undertaking the arduous tasks of secretaryships. The committee was greatly assisted by numerous members of the cliib and othera. The lnemheis of the club have every reason to be gratified with the success achieved by their efforts, nml there can he hid. little doubt that tho annual ball of the Gisborne Golf Club will next year lie looked forward to with eager anticipation.
