'JO THOSE PERSONS WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THE FUNDS FOR P ROPOS E B “ME A lOR IA L WARD.” QOME considerable time ago during LI , nv previous Chairmanship ot the Hospital Board, f was instrumental in collecting a substantial sum of money, to lie devoted to the erection of a special “Consumption Ward” as a Memorial Ward to Fallen Soldiers from this District. This’ sum has been on deposit at the Bank of New Zealand, together with the subsidy subscribed by Government, and now amounts to about £SOOO. As the need for a special ■ “Consumptive Ward” is not acute and may possibly become unnecessary owing to other action on the pa-'t of the Health Department, I am of opinion that this amount can be put to equally good use in a rather different direction, 'i he insistent need for a new Institution for the accommodation of indigent Old People, of both sexes, is becoming more, and more pressing, and as the present Institution in Roebuck Road is incapable of enlargement and is becoming very dilapidated in condition, 1 have thought that this money could he very beneficially' devoted to this undertaking. An admirable site., from all points of view, exists at the now Hospital Farm at Mangapapa, where surrounding conditions would be incomparably better than such as now obtain at the Roebuck Road site, and there are other sources of income to the Board, which make it reasonable to assert that in this way a new and commodious and suitable Horne can be built without further dipping into Ratepayers’ pockets. Further, would not such an Institution be an admirable memorial for the object ior which this money was subscribed in the first instance? (Signed) AY. G. SHEItRATT, ChairiY.ian. H. J.
