TIMBER ROYALTIES.
POSITION OF TATJMARUNTTI COUNTY. TAUAIAHUNUI., July 24.; At the Timber Royalties Commissi;:;) the chairman of the Tatimariumi County estimated that the County required £365.000 for metalling roads and contended that half the timber royalty shot*.ld be paid to tlio local body. Another witness said his district had mot received any royalty though the Government had drawn £50.000. They had always been turned down 0 11 account of the Alain Trunk Act of 1899. Air. Campbell, Conservator of Forests, contended that local bodies wore rot entitled to a timber royalty, and must depend on grants for maintaining their roads. He urged that great care should, lie exercised in reserving forest areas. One more mistake would be fatal.—P.A. "
