PACIFIC CABLE.

DUPLICATION WORK TO START SHORTLY. NO FEARS OF WIRELESS RIVALRY AT PRESENT. (United Prose Association—Copyright.* SYDNEY, May 10. The steamer Stephen is shortly to arrive from London 'with material for two new cables for the Pacific cable aboard—one for the SouthportSydnc.y line, and the other for the Suva-Auckland section. As the routes have already been surveyed, the work of laying the cables will be started shortly after the vessel’s arrival. Mr. Milwaicl, manager of the Pacific Cable, says the duplication of the cable from Canada to Fiji is held up pending tests of the new cable, which is calculated io considerably increase the speed in transmission of messages and to bring about a reduction in rates. If the tests are .successful all the cable companies recognise it will bring about a revolution in cable telegraphy. Mr. Milward added that, whilst lie admitted that wireless would play an important part in connection with strategic purposes, it would not be feared commercially in the near future/ Tn any case, if commercial wireless developed the cable concerns hoped by an ultimate reduction in rates to successfully compete against it. Mr. Milward states the new type of cable now being tested is expected to increase the carrying capacity at least eight times, compared 'with what is possible at present.—U.P.A.
