ANZAO DAY CELEBRATIONS
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —From the numerous notices affixed to the old Kaiti bridge regulating traffic, it would appear that the powers in charge of that- structure have long since considered that its safety is doubted. It occurred to me, Sir, that the number of people who will use the bridge on Anzac Day may prove a serious menace to themselves, and that beyond the extra traffic to the site of the Memorial many people may linger upon the bridge to use it as a vantage point from which to view the ceremony. To avert a serious catastrophe, it cannot be too strongly pointed out to the public, and to those in charge of r kc proceedings, that the police must ce given every assistance in regulating the traffic, both going to and from the site of the Memorial; and more especially, the big return. crowd. It has been asserted that the greatest test upon a bridge is the passing along it of a body of troops marching in step. This fact should have the attention of the officers in charge of the various contingents who will be in attendance. It is a pity that the site will prove
so congested owing to its position, and, if it is not too late, could not voice amplifiers he obtained to transmit the speeches to the . town side of the river,* where the grassed slopes along the river hank will afford an. excellent position from which to view the proceedings .in comfort. Hoping that ’the old-; bridge will prove equal to its last strenuous effort.—l am,'yours etc., _ - ’ “SAFETY FIRST.”
