DANNEiVIRKE, April 16. At the inquest ot John Bell, killed on the Mangatawaiiti bridge on Friday, the evidence showed that deceased was stripping the casing off a green concrete pier, when the pier co lapsed, deceased being buried under concrete in a space between the casing holding the bank and that hoi ling the pier. The pier was only put into position the day prior to the accident. The opinion of witnesses was that the earthquake- the same evening damaged it to such an extent as to cause its collapse. lne coroi er returned a verdict that death was due through a fracture of the skul], —P.A.

MOTOR CRASHES THROUGH BRIDGE.

DANNEVIRKE. April 16. A rather sensational motor mishap occurred early on Sunday morning. A car, containing Ivan L. Sight (a young airman who was in the recent forced landing at New Brighton) and L. Cowan,- was proceeding south from Dannevirke, and crashed into the side of a bridge in Rawluti street Tire high-powered Packard stripped the whole side of the protecting rails and traversed the structure with two wheels on it and two wheels over the edge of the bridge, 30 feet long, over a creek 30 feet below, and but for the outside wheels bumping the protecting stay planks the car must have toppled over. It went a couple of chains beyond the bridge before it was pulled np,.,and then caught fire Neither of the occupants was hurt. The car was extensively damaged,—P.A.

. WANGANUI. April 16. _ A distressing fatality occurred this morning on St. John’s hill. Two lads, Thomas and Alexander Balhngall, double banked on a bicycle, were riding to school, when they were run into by a motor car driven by Mrs Mcßae. The eldest boy, aged 9s, was killed outright.. The other boy was badly bruised and rendered unconscious, but is not seriously injured.—P.A:
