COAST NEWS.

TOKOMARU BAY JOTTINGS

' Tokomaru Bay, April 14. There has been dry weather with cold nights for the past fortnight. The rainfall for February was 1.47 in. and foi March ].36in., the total for the first three months of the year being ll.lSin., a* compared with 23.03 in for the simihn period last year. The roads have benefited by the dry spell and a considerable amount of "metalling is being done in tiie country. The Bench road is still a source of worry to the council arid io in a very rough state.

The Coast people are quite proud of the touring'cricket team and their success in Napier and Gisborne. It is to ho regretted that Gisborne failqfi to meet tho Coast on its own ground. The question arises: Is the Poverty Bay Cricket Association of any benefit to the Coast, or the latter tf> the former ?

Tennis has been much in evidence through tho season, the several now private courts being a great help. Bowling, too, has apparently come to stay, and Mr. Jennings is to be complimented upon taking a team to Gisborne for tile Burton Trophy tournament.

Football has been in the air for weeks and numerous entertainments have raised considerable funds for' that sport, and at present a Queen Carnival is being run by the three local clubs, and yesterday a Mock Court was held. The Sub-Union has leased a fine large building and put it in order for entertainments, and is doing good business. The playing season will be opened on April 21st by City in a match against Wanderers,.

The local schools, native and public, have met in two games of cricket under the guidance of their respective masters, Messrs Frazer and Menzies, each school winning a match. Thero is talent amongst the hoys, and a good team could he picked from the lot.

The Golf season is to open this week and enthusiasts are busy preparing the links. The Ladies’ Hockey Club have held their annual meeting, and there is evidence of a more numerous membership this year. The balance-sheet showed some £2O in hand after giving a handsome donation to the cricket ground improvement fund. Mrs J. L. Grant was re-elected president, Miss C. Oates captain, and Mrs F. Wickens secretary, and a good working committee was set up and early morning practices arranged. A good coach is much needed. Mr W. Oates, senr., was made patron m recognition of his past services to the club. Householders are looking forward to the annual meeting in tlic schoolroom on Monday, 23rd inst. —Special.
