SMART ARREST.

QUICK WORK BY DETECTIVE Mc-LEOD.

Last evening, at about 7 o’clock, the telephone bell in His Majesty's building in Childers Road tinkled, and Detective McLeod, who answered the call, was informed that between i a.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. yesterday some unauthorised person had broken into a hut near Wairoa, and by some mischance the sum of £'6l had disappeared at the same time as the visitor left, which certainly appeared suspicious, to say the least-. The Wairoa police felt concerned for the welfare of one individual, who had. it was said, been seen near the spot, and confided their views to Detective McLeod. At 7.10 Detective McLeod left the police station, and at 5.30 he returned. but in company with an unwilling guest, whom the detective had persuaded, after a few words at Matawliero, to "try his luck for the night” in the Peel Street castle. The visitor was received with open arms and his name entered in the book. It was explained that his call at such an early hour after his hosts had received notice was remarkable, and in the circumstances apologies were tendered for the fact that there was no bed-warmer on his couch and no flowers were placed in his room, and amid mutual good wishes on either side the visitor retired for the night. This morning he will be introduced to other ■ prominent residents of the town, the appointment with Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M., being set down for 10 a.m.
