ANONYMOUS GIFT TO NEW ZEALAND. LATE A'AN DER VELDEN’S PAINTINGS. WELLINGTON, Feb. 24. A large and representative collection of paintings and drawings, the work of the well-known artist P. Yan der Yelden (deceased) kgs been presented to the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts by an anonymous donor. The collection comprises several large canvasses in oil, many studies and rough sketches in the same medium, and a number of exquisite studies in black and white, a condition attaching to the gift is that the pictures shall be hung together in one room, and shall be named the Van der Velden Collection.” Owing to the overcrowded state of tlie gallery at present, it will be difficult to comply with this condition, and it may be necessary to loan to other galleries some pictures now on the walls in order to provide the necessary room.—P.A.
