QUICKSTEP COMPETITION

March discipline* was awarded double the marks allotted to music. The maximum points obtainable were 300 of which 200 were for marching and 100 for music. Marching points were subdivided as follow:—(a) Dressing, steadiness, and position at attention, j 15;- (b) general appearance, 10; (c) ! cleanliness of instruments, 10; (d) j forming marching order, 10; (e) | marching to point A, 5; (f) marching from A to B, 10; (g) first march, 10; (h) marching from B to C (10); (i) second counter-march TO; (j) left turn, 10; (k) march to point C. 10; (1) right turn, 10; (m) match C to D, 10; (n) right wheel, 10; (o) march to E and halt, 10; (p) time, 25; (q) paces, 25; total, 200; music, 1Q0; grand total/ 300. In the results given below, the letters in brackets-in the preceding paragraph are used, to indicate the various sub-sections of march discipline. The bands are placed in order of merit.

The" winner turned up in the Invercargill Hibernian Band (says the N.Z. Times). One thought of the familiar lines from- “ Jones, of The Lancers”—

“By gad. you should see us on duty, All'booted and hatted and spurred,” as they swept past the grandstand. Their discipline emulated the Coldstream Guards. In the military movements they established a lead that pronounced them ultimate winners—the nearest in points being the Wellington -Tramways, who tied with the Hastings* Town Band; then followed, in that order, Palmerston North. Gisborne and the Wanganui Garrison. When the points fat’ music were notified, it became known that the .Irishmen from the Far South had excelled here, too; they notched 92 points out of a possible 100. Four points behind were the “Trammies.” Music brought the Wanganui .Garrison up from sixth to third place. The splendid playing of the Canterbury Mounteds gave them second position in music, with 90 points; this brought them up from eighth to fourth place. None begrudged the Hibernians their win ; it was most popular.
