“MADE IN GERMANY.”

IS TRADE RESTRICTED?

AN INTERESTING CATALOGUE

The question of whether or not German goods are being imported into New Zealand has been frequently discussed during the past few months, and there is a popular belief that the trade restrictions are not being so rigidly enforced as previously. It has been frequently • suggested that German goods are being imported through Qzeeho-Slovakia, and .whether tiiis lie correct or otherwise, it is certain that there/is an increasing amount of trade between New Zealand and this new Stale.

Numbers of trade catalogues are coming to hand from this country, and the contents of some of .them are particularly interesting. Last week a local importer received a catalogue for musical instruments and accessories from a firm bearing the name of Gouty, whose address is given as Czeclio-Smvakia. One of t!i#moststriking features about the catalogue is that on the back page it bears the imprint “Printed in Saxony.” Throughout the catalogue there are repeated instances of German manufactures. Viennese and German aceordeons are listed, the latter being termed of ••first-rate quality and very cheap.” .More striking-still, however, is the fact that the illustrations of mouth-organs bear the imprint “Made in Germany,” despite the fact .that they are given such names as the “Royal Scots,” and “Union Jack.” The manufacturer quotes prices f.o.b. Rotterdam, but in asking for quotations stipulates c-.i.f. Rotterdam. Liberal discounts are offered to purchasers of goods valued at £2OO cr more, and it is interesting to note that all prices are quoted in English pounds, although sizes and measurements are given in German. It is not impossible, of course, that the goods are of bona fide Czceho-Slcvakia manufacture, but if so it would appear unwise to allow the German trade marks to bo so prominent.
