PROTEST AGAINST TAXES

A telegram from Winnipeg, Manitoba, says that Peter Varcgin, leader of the strange Russian religious sec-t known as the DoukhuSots. which lias 900 settlers in Canada, proposed that the whole tribe should drown all children, under ten years of age, together with the aged and infirm, as a protest against exorbitant taxes. When riel of those unable to travel Varegin asks bis followers to abandon their farms and wander over the country, preaching the coming cf Christ. This is believed to be tlie outcome of a long conflict between tlie Russian Nonconformists and tlie Canadian Government.—A. and N.Z.C.A.
