HOSPITAL FARM.

BOARD’S LATEST ENTERPRISE.

MORGUE BOARDS AND FOWLHOUSE FOR NEW BUILDING.

The troubles of tlie Hospital farm, which have for a long time occupied the attention of the Board, do not yet appear to be at an end. The erection of tlie new .“shanty” is still exercising the minds of the farm committee and it seems probable that further revisions to the original plans will yet have to be made. The plans originally decided upon provided for a box - like building divided into four or five compartments, . entrance to the so-called rooms being gained from one to the other. The alterations, however, include a passage running through the house, and an extra window on the side facing the road. It will take a great deal more than this, however, to make the building appear an acquisition to the farm property. As has previously been pointed out the site fertile new building is im an open space fronting the main road, and, of course, in full view of the public. The Board lias been authorised to spend £IOOO on farm buildings, but is only using half this amount for the new cottage, and it is understood that before the project: is proceeded with the matter will be further enquired into. It is generally considered that the expenditure of ■a few extra pounds on a verandah or a porch-would be money well spent, and that by this means the new building would appear more in keeping with the remainder of the property. In connection with this matter, however. chief exception is taken to the materials which are being used to construct the building. It has previously been stated that old timber from cowbails and a fowl-house were to be used, and to (his there has now to be added the old morgue. It can well, be conceived that old timber could be' advantageously used for a new building, but it is doubtful if members of the Board would appreciate sleeping in a bedroom, the walls of which had formerly been part of the morgue, or eating their meals in a room for which timber had been taken from a fowlhouse .or cow-bail. The position, however, is accentuated by the fact tlnit the Board has also to erect new fowlhouses and pigstyes on the farm, and the question is naturally asked as to whether mew timber will be used for this purpose. The fowl-house at the , Hospital, it is understood, could be removed intact to the farm, and meet all present requirements, while it would appear quite reasonable to suggest that the old morgue and cow-bails could be better used for pigstyes than ; for a manager’s “residence,” however - inelegant the latter might be. There is still time for the Board to re-ad-just its plans, and it is to he hoped that before tlie erection of the cottage j is proceeded with, the matter will be given further careful attention.
