FAIRYLAND TROTTING

BEATS GALLOPING AS A SPECTACLE.

A correspondent of the Sydney'Referee, writing from" Perth, makes the following interesting comment on trotting in West Australia:— “Being importuned by friends to go and see a trotting sight of Australia,. I took a threepenny tram on Saturday night to the Cricket Association Ground, where the West Australian Trotting Association holds electric light meetings. And it was all that was claimed. There were over 5000 people present, mostly in the grandstand enclosure. These were catered for by straight-out (10s) and place (5) totalisator and twentyfour bookmakers. The myriads of electric lights around and across the half-mile track, which encircles the cricket oval, would make the Great White Way of Fifth Avenue, New York, look as a rushlight to the sim. This track is about 60ft wide, with two long straights and a couple of gentle bends, which allow up to twenty-three competitors in harness to take part in an event on its slightly banked bed' of shell and sand taken from the river.

“In one race I saw, twenty sulkies competed, and as four of. the competitors finished almost abreast, it was one of the most exciting moments I have gone through during the forty years I have followed turf doingjs. This fairyland trotting has the galloping distanced in the way of a ■'.spectacle, and some day will put the galloper in the place it has in .the United States.

BOXING. HUGHIE JJWYES - DEFEATS LES MURRAYA WILLING ENCOUNTER. PALMERSTON N„ Dec. 26. , The Opera House at Palmerstoji N. was crowded when Hughie Dwyer met and defeated Les Murray. Tlio fight was set to go 15 rounds, but at the thirteenth the referee, Mr Stewart, stopped it and declared Dwyer tile winner. Dwyer opened very cautiously and Murray kept boring in on him, and with several rounds gone Dwyer began to idle up the points and the southern boy's end was in sight before half the journey had been covered. Dwyer scored repeatedly with blows to the head, and time and time again had Murray at his mercy. He seemed to refrain from administering the knockout, but continued to land on Murray’s jaw. Murray took a lot of punishment gamely, but he had no chance with Dwyer. In the thirteenth round Dwyer drove Murray to the ropes and banged him into a completely groggy condition and could have sent him for the count had the referee not intervened. It was a good fight, and Dwyer gave a splendid exhibition. WESTPORT, Dec. 26. At the Westport Boxing Association’s tourney the professional bout, Gleeson v. Preston (both of Australia) for a purse of £l7O, went the full distance, Gleeson winning on points.
