KAITI HILL WORKS.

GOVERNMENT ASKED FOB SUBSIDY I MAYOR’S REPRESENTATION TO MINISTER..

During his recent visit to Wellington, the Mayor (Mr G. Wildish), made representations to the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. J. G. Coates, m an endeavour to obtain Government assistance for the Borough Council unemployment relief works on,Haiti hill, and, although nothing definite has yet been, decided, it would appear that tliere is at least a possibility of this assistance being forthcoming. , In sjieaking of this matter yesterday, Mr Wildish stated that he had discussed the local unemployment question' with Mr Coates, and had asked that a sum of £250 should, be placed upon the estimates as a subsidy towards the Haiti hill ,park improvements. He pointed out that, about 10 years . ago, a similar sum had been placed on the estimates for this work, but unfortunately, owing to the Counr oil's failure to make use of it, the grant had lapsed. He had urged that this should be renewed this year, and the proposal had' been rather favorably received by the Minister, who had stated that before definitely committing himself he would communicate with the District Engineer, Mr C. E. Armstrong upon the matter. He had intimated that, as the money had previously been voted for this purpose, there should be a really good chance of the amount being granted. It was explained to him that there was still a cpn- , siderahle amount of unemployment in the district, and the Mayor supplied him with the list of proposed expenditure on this work, as had been given to Mr J. S. Barton, S.M. The generosity of the public in subscribing for this work was also impressed upon the Minister by Mr Wildish, who said that in view of the manner in which the citizens had responded to the appeal to assist the unemployed,...he conveidered that the Government should . render .some assistance or subsidise the money which has already been obtained.

“If this subsidy is available," said Mr Wildish, “there is no reason why this work should not he completed and Haiti hill made one of ..the beauty spots of the Dominion.”
