FATAL MISHAP

MAN KILLED AT ORMOND

SEQUEL TO AID IN CONTROLLING

MOB OF CATTLE. * ; HORSE STUMBLES AND FALLS. A laborer named James Farrow, who resided at Ormond, was fatally injured by a fall irom a horse at about 4 p.m. yesterday. It is stated that a mob of cattle got out of a paddock belonging to Mr Rigney. A man named Bean, who was sitting on his horse near the Post Office, tried to stop the cattle, but they were a stubborn; mob and he did not succeed. Farrow jumped on his horse and went to assist. Bean’s horse was done up and Farrow went, after one beast .which - made off towards Waerenga-a-hika. As he was galloping past the. beast, his horse was apparently either bumped or tripped and fell, Farrow being thrown heavily to the ground’ and fracturing his skull. He expired at *3.50 p.m., just 5 minutes after the accident occurred. Nurse Harnoni, outside whose parents’ place the accident occurred, immediately attended the .unfortunate man, and Dr. F. Kahlenberg was summoned and upon* arrival made an examination of the body.

At the time of the accident. Bean was about 400 yards away watching the other cattle and he did not actually see the deceased fall. A man named George McKay was working almost opposite, but could not say positively what caused the horse to fall. He saw it go down*, however, and heard deceased’s skull crack as he struck the ground. The deceased was a married man, 80 years of age, and leaves a widow and liuv young children. The coroner, Mr J. S. Barton, S.M., will view the body early this morning, and an inquest will be held to-morrow.
