The Daiß Express says a match between Beckett and "McCormack will be ratified shortly and that the winner should he matched with Cook (the New Zealander) and the victor in the latter contest have the fight to meet Carpentier.—A. and N.Z.C.A. TENNIS MACARTNEY PLAYS AT HOME. (Received Aug 10, 8.30 p.m.) LONDON. Aug. 10. Macartney partners Doust in the men’s doubles at the South of- England tennis championship at Eastbourne in September.—A. and N.Z. C.A. 1024 BILLIARDS BREAK. NEWMAN’S RECORD. Tom Newman, the champion of English billiards, made a break of 1024 at Burroughes Hall, Piccadilly, London, in his match with Lawrence. This is his record break. The previous best all-round break with ivory balls was 994 by Stevenson; who has also scored 1016 with bonzoline balls; but George Gray, the Australian, made 1135, chiefly by means of red losers. The biggest break of any kind on record is 499,135 by Tom Reece in 1907, and included 248,552 of the famous “cradle” cannons now barred.
